Front Cover Feature!
Chris from Dav-Tec has recently completed his stunning VW T6.1 build, and what a van it is! With a deep passion for modifying, Chris set out to create one of the finest Transporters on the road. The result? A head-turning masterpiece that has now landed on the front cover of VWt Magazine! We’d say mission accomplished.
The Audio System – Built to Impress
Chris has a strong love for audio, so choosing the right brands was crucial. He needed a setup that would truly deliver. Enter Morel Hifi! As Morel celebrates its 50th anniversary, the brand continues to produce some of the finest speakers in the industry. Having used Morel products before, Chris knew their exceptional build quality and sound reproduction made them the perfect choice.
For amplification, a Helix DSP amplifier was used, providing full control over the entire speaker system. The built-in Digital Signal Processor (DSP) enables precise tuning for each individual channel, allowing adjustments to time alignment, equalization, and highly specific crossover settings. This ensures optimal sound staging, clarity, and a perfectly balanced audio experience throughout the vehicle.
The Setup in Detail
Speakers: A Full Active 3-Way System
Chris opted for a Morel Elate Carbon 3-way setup, ensuring next-level performance and insanely accurate sound reproduction. Here’s how it’s configured:
- 6.5” Midbass – Installed in solid aluminium adaptors in the the stock location
- 3.5” Midrange & 1.1” Tweeter – Mounted in custom A-pillar builds
The Elate Carbon series boasts triple-layer carbon cones, large 3-inch Hexatech voice coils, and Acuflex-coated silk dome tweeters—all of which contribute to a beautifully detailed and dynamic soundstage. And let’s be honest, they look absolutely stunning too!
Rear Fill: Morel Maximo Coaxials
The Maximo speakers sit within Morel’s entry-level range, but don’t let that label fool you—they deliver significantly more depth and clarity than most speakers at this price point. In many builds, rear speakers aren’t upgraded to ultra-high-end models like the Elate Carbon, as this can shift focus away from the front soundstage. However, with a van’s larger cabin space, adding quality rear fill made perfect sense to create a more immersive audio experience.
To achieve this, the speakers were mounted in custom pods designed by Chris. These pods feature a unique twist-lock mechanism, making installation incredibly simple and secure. If you’re interested in the details of these custom mounts, be sure to check them out!
Bass: Morel PowerSlim Subwoofers
A killer sound system wouldn’t be complete without serious bass! Chris went all-in with Morel PowerSlim subwoofers:
10” PowerSlim – Mounted under the front seat in a custom birch-ply down-firing enclosure
Two 12” PowerSlims – Installed in the rear, maximising bass output without sacrificing space
With their small enclosure requirements and high power handling, these subs pack a punch while maintaining a sleek, space-efficient design.
